Home: Welcome

Native Americans first came into the Lake Superior area following the retreat of the last glaciers, about 10 thousand years ago. These first people were exploring, searching for resources, and following migratory big game animals. A primary resource they were after was knappable stone, to be used for flake stone tool making. They also found copper. Over time and through trial and error, they became adept at the manufacturing of copper tools, resulting in what we now call "The Old Copper Complex". The CCASC is a group working to further the knowledge and understanding of the early inhabitants of the Lake Superior region.

The purpose of the Copper Country Ancient Sites Conservancy is to facilitate the identification, protection and professional investigation of the ancient archaeological sites of Lake Superior’s Copper Country, while also promoting the education of the general public concerning ancient archaeology.
